Abstract | An important role of physical education (PE) is to provide students with opportunities to be physically active. Toward this end, instructional alignment is introduced in this article as a means of promoting moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) during PE. Following its introduction, the importance and effectiveness of instructional alignment in terms of student learning outcomes is reviewed. The article next describes three steps for implementing instructional alignment in the PE curriculum with an emphasis on promoting students' MVPA during PE by: 1) identifying PE objectives that align with national recommendations; 2) modifying and developing class environments aimed at promoting MVPA; and 3) assessing students' MVPA by using objective measurements. These strategies can help increase students' MVPA time during PE. (As Provided). |
