Abstract | ENC 3310 Advanced Exposition is an upper-level writing course offered by the English department at the University of Florida. According to the undergraduate catalog, ENC 3310 is intended to introduce students to the "methods of exposition," including "definition, classification, comparison and contrast, analysis, illustration and identification." Due to the generalized nature of ENC 3310, the English department encourages instructors to organize their sections around a specific theme, genre, or modality. As such, ENC 3310 Writing through Podcasts, uses a semester-length podcasting project to teach expository writing. In this course, students demonstrate expository writing techniques through both print and sound-based media within the context of three major assignments: (1) a podcast analysis essay, (2) a podcast proposal assignment, and (3) a four-episode podcast mini-series. The section of ENC 3310 the author discusses in this course design was taught over an accelerated six-week semester in summer 2017 that met Monday through Friday for 75-minute periods. (ERIC). |
