AbstractChild trafficking continues to pose a major hindrance to the freedom and educational development of the girl-child in Nigeria. Most of the girls trafficked are forced into prostitution, forced labour and in some cases as human sacrifice. Some families support this trend because they see it as a means to break the yoke of economic hardship. The lure of better economic opportunities in urban areas to escape the scourge of deprivation in the rural areas is also a formidable pull factor in this act. Unlike the slave trade, which took on a crude status, trafficking of humans, especially children and women today in Nigeria, has exceeded the strategies used during the slave trade. This is why the writing of this paper at this point in time is relevant. Hence, the paper looks into the meaning of child trafficking, types of child trafficking, the causes and effects on the girl-child education, the problems associated with child trafficking, efforts made so far and recommendations.
