Abstract | As a principal, Sarah E. Fiarman learned that developing teacher leadership requires more than merely soliciting teacher input. "School leaders," she writes, "need to create a culture in which each professional feels an urgent responsibility to influence the achievement of all students." To promote such a schoolwide leadership mindset, principals should explicitly build teachers' leadership skills and help them break away from the traditional school norms, in which all teachers have the same responsibilities and each teacher is solely responsible for what happens in his or her own classroom. Second, principals should share responsibility for meaningful work that directly affects teaching and learning--not just superficial decisions like choosing the theme for school spirit week. Third, principals should clarify how much decision-making power teachers will have on each project. Although sharing leadership can be challenging and messy, writes Fiarman, the result can be a more innovative school. (As Provided). |
