Abstract | Keeping a log of scientific investigations, discoveries, and notes is a process that scientists have used throughout history. Elementary-age children engage in similar types of documentation when they perform investigations and sketch, label, or provide details about their work and findings. This column includes activities inspired by children's literature. This month's issue has students engaging in documentation when they perform investigations and sketch, label, or provide details about their work and findings. The following two trade books and lessons are presented: (1) "Neo Leo: The Ageless Ideas of Leonardo da Vinci" (Gene Baretta). Lesson: To learn about Leonardo da Vinci's ideas, which were later turned into actual inventions by others, by testing three of da Vinci's concepts and recording the process and findings; and (2) "Welcome to New Zealand: A Nature Journal" (Sandra Morris). Lesson: To make observations about natural objects or phenomena; record those observations in detail using a nature journal; and share knowledge through notes, illustrations, and the presentation of information.
