AbstractSigmund Tobias came to the United States in 1948, after his family had fled to China from the Holocaust in Europe. His Memoir ("Strange Haven: A Jewish Childhood in Wartime Shanghai") describes that part of his life. He settled in New York, where he completed his B.A. and M.S. in School Psychology from the City College of New York, and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Columbia University. Dr. Tobias spent the largest part of his academic career on the faculty of the City College. He moved to Fordham University as Distinguished Scholar in the Educational Psychology graduate program. Later he was Distinguished Research Scientist, Institute for Urban and Minority Education, Teachers College, Columbia University. He is now Eminent Research Professor, Department of Educational and Counseling Psychology, the University at Albany. He has published extensively in the scientific and professional literature in the fields of instructional psychology, educational research, and educational technology. This article features an interview in which Tobias shares his views on topics such as computer games for learning, transfer of the violence from some games to real life, research in the field of computer games and instruction, cognitive readiness, and people who have influenced or impacted his work. A combined list of references and suggested readings is provided. (ERIC).
