Abstract | The author, an outspoken advocate for using technology in the classroom, knows how important it is to establish expectations for responsible use of mobile devices. She's found that five strategies help ensure that mobile devices enhance, rather than distract from, learning. Teachers need to establish new norms that clarify responsible use, cultivate a culture of sharing, use devices to challenge and engage, not shy away from asking students to put their devices away, and embrace the diversity of devices. Mobile devices offer teachers with limited access to hardware and technology an opportunity to transform learning in their classrooms. As the author points out, "The moment students enter the room [with their mobile devices], my low-tech classroom is instantly transformed into a buzzing technology hub." (As Provided). |
