AbstractThis article introduces a conversation with Brett Peiser, named chief executive officer of "Uncommon Schools" in July of 2012, along with the principal of North Star Academy Vailsburg Middle School, a charter school in Newark, New Jersey's West Ward. There is no doubt that "Uncommon Schools" has given thousands of low-income students throughout the U.S. Northeast great options since the charter management organization (CMO) was created by Norman Atkins in 2005. Peiser points out that the goal is to start schools that close the achievement gap and make sure that low-income students are prepared to enter into and succeed in college. "Uncommon" is relentless in its focus on teaching technique, and to that end, each classroom has a video camera. Why?, one of the biggest pieces of the school's teacher development is practice and feedback. If you practice a lesson plan and get feedback, you're going to get better, so videotaping each teacher and their classroom skill increases their opportunity for improvement. Peiser notes a love for the work that he does in the context of charters, because charters have the freedom and flexibility to create the school that they want, but in exchange for that flexibility and freedom, they're held strictly accountable for results. Peiser adds that, in addition to good teachers, is good content and that is the success of "Uncommon." When schools set a high bar for students, whether it is behavior or academics, and you give them the support and the practice and the feedback to get there, they will get there. (ERIC).
