AbstractSometimes an enthusiast might confuse enthusiasm for competence. Related experiences and a sense of commitment can suggest that mentors are positioned to do something well, even when they have had no genuine preparation for the task. In this article, the author warns them that their experience as teachers by itself may be insufficient preparation for gracefully making the moves that mentoring a new teacher requires. Too often mentors assume their role with little training to take on the responsibility. At its core, mentorship is a human relationship. This means that the partners have roles, responsibilities, and contributions. Certainly the responsibility of being a mentor means more than transmitting wisdom or encouraging the mentee to mirror the mentor's moves. As the author points out, if the mentor and mentee work in partnership, they need to trust in each other and rely on open communication to reveal the mutual responsibilities involved in refining the craft of teaching.
