Abstract | How can one capture the good practice within the further education sector and identify how best to develop the workforce? This conundrum has taxed government and professionals within the sector for decades. The introduction of Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS), the Certificate (CTLLS) and Diploma (DTLLS) in 2007 was the culmination of years of discussion, debate and exhortation to enable people to succeed and for the vast sector to take its place in the drive for economic success and social welfare. These new teaching qualifications drew upon previous standards developed by the Further Education National Training Organisation which were then subsumed into standards set by Lifelong Learning October. In this article, the authors discuss the recommendations and ask how the sector should respond to conflicting signals from government and how, in a time of fiscal constraint, it can preserve the good practice that has developed over many years.
