AbstractEmotional literacy has an important place in the English curriculum because emotions cannot be separated from reading, writing, and thinking critically with language. Teachers can use the study of literature, writing, and language to reframe emotion from being something that creates victims and victimizers into feelings that can be critically analyzed and revised into thoughts, words, and acts that will assist them and others in leading more productive lives together. In this article, the author advocates that English teachers address the problem of bullying by educating emotion through the study of literature, writing, drama, media, and especially language. The thoughtless use of language can do great harm to others in ways that may not be apparent; for example, the author concludes with a section about how teachers might rethink their use of language when making decisions about how they teach argument.
