AbstractThe latest scheduled Sorokin Readings on "Global Social Turbulence and Russia," a topic whose relevance has been confirmed by events of the past 10 years, were held on 6-7 December at Moscow State University. One key factor that keeps such turbulence in check is the education level as a factor of a high standard of living. The array of problems in question were discussed at a roundtable under the direction of V. I. Dobren'kov, president of the Russian Sociology Association, dean of the sociology faculty at Moscow State University, and chair of the organizing and program committees of the readings. In this roundtable discussion, prominent Russian educational experts surveyed the state of education in Russia, its suitability for a society in transition in a fast changing world, and the ways in which educational reform in Russia could enable young people to contribute to and benefit from a more effective educational system. The roundtable concluded on a note that encouraged optimism with the remarks of the representative of Moscow State University who organized the Sorokin Readings. There is every good reason to suggest that the issues addressed at this roundtable will attract the attention of scientists and practitioners who are oriented toward overcoming uncertainties. [The roundtable was moderated by V. I. Dobren'kov. This article was translated by Kim Braithwaite.] (ERIC).
