AbstractAlthough Virginia teachers earn thousands more annually than their counterparts in states such as Mississippi and Arkansas, data show that the Virginia teacher retention percentage is among the lowest in the U.S. (North, 2021). Comparing teacher salaries to those of other occupations, the Commonwealth ranks 50th in the nation, just ahead of the District of Columbia. Comparatively, teachers earn 10.4% less than Virginia's average teacher pay. The average teacher income in Virginia is $53,933, whereas the average compensation for all other vocations is $60,160 (North, 2021). In this dissertation, the researcher explored (a) explore how public school teachers in the state of Virginia describe the influence of salary on remaining employed as a teacher; (b) how public school teachers in the state of Virginia describe the influence of salary on their intent to accept employment as a teacher; and (c) what public school teachers in the state of Virginia believe are the best strategies and practices to address the teacher recruitment and retention. Data were gathered from written and voiced interviews with participants serving as teachers in a K-12 school district in the State of Virginia.
