AbstractThis study was aimed to explore Chinese college and university students' motivations to study abroad and examining how their career aspiration influence their decision-making process. 5 research questions were developed from this research topic. A qualitative phenomenological methodology was applied. The researcher himself and the face-to-face interviews are utilized as the major tools to this study. The study involved gathering data from recorded and transcribed interviews with 15 Chinese students who had experienced study abroad programs to western countries from University A. This study followed Creswell's (2003) procedure to data analysis and interpretation. NVivo 12 was applied during this process to identify themes exploring Chinese college and university students' motivations to study abroad and examining how their career aspiration influence their decision-making process. 8 themes were emerged from the data include: (a) Concerns of Destination Selection of study abroad; (b) Decision Making of Study Abroad; (c) Motivating Factors of Study Abroad; (d) Most Influential Messengers of Study Abroad; (e) Assumptions & Expectation of Study Abroad; (f) Career Aspirations; (g) Challenges & Barriers; (h) Outcomes & Benefit of Study Abroad. The themes were emerged from the interview questions, and the interview questions were designed and generated from the research questions of this study. By analyzing the collected data and emerged themes, the author found the potential and appropriate answers to the research questions. The study provided insight into what motivate and influence Chinese college and university students to purchase study abroad programs and their career aspirations. Findings of the study may help educational, local, state leaders to make internationalization strategies and policies.
