AbstractCurrent research shows that students have the most investment in reaching their educational objectives but have no influence or voice in how their education is provided. This research study explored the lived experiences and lifted the voices of TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) recent community college graduates who reached their academic goals despite facing barriers. Studies have indicated that minority students have a predominant existence in terms of enrollment at community colleges, but completion rates are not equivalent. Consequently, drawing on the question, "How do students overcome barriers to succeed?" Using Padilla's (2009) Model for Minority Student Success as the conceptual framework, the researcher then applied the Local Student Success Model (LSSM) and The Unfolding Matrix to interview TRIO students at a rural community college in the Southeast region of the United States, who achieved academic success by overcoming internal and external barriers. Although a great deal of attention focuses on student support programs, not much is known about the lived experiences of TRIO SSS participants who have utilized the program's services to help them reach academic success. Findings from this study will help community colleges to design and/or reimagine services that increases retention, degree completion, and four-year institutional transfer rates, by using the TRIO Student Support Services program model to support a larger student population. This research focused on how students moved through the college's "black box" while identifying barriers, accessing knowledge to navigate those barriers, and taking the necessary actions to overcome those barriers and achieve academic success.
