AbstractThis ethnographic case study focused on 19 job seekers in an urban public access computer lab to explore the challenges these individuals faced related to technology platforms and a variety of overlapping institutions. In addition to shedding new light on how structural barriers emerge across institutions and systems, this study also focused on the job seekers' learning and literacy practices, as they gained new approaches for using technology tools in the lab in agentive ways, and practiced forms of everyday resistance to address challenges. Using fieldnotes, interviews, screenshots, and a variety of archival data, this study shows that adults come to public access computer labs with a wealth of knowledge and experiences, and they are routinely sharing knowledge across their communities as well. Findings show that the job seekers experienced numerous tensions using commercial job search platforms and navigating government agencies to access resources. However, some of these challenges led to new opportunities for learning and more democratic configurations of knowledge production which resulted in powerful literacy practices. Public access computer labs can be vital, not only in providing programs and resources which support adult learning, but also in encouraging and amplifying adults' acts of everyday resistance, which may eventually bring about needed systemic change.
