AbstractCOVID-19 led to the closing of all Oklahoma schools in March of 2020, and the situation put public school superintendents in the position of having to communicate with constituents in the middle of an unforeseen crisis. The communication strategies superintendents use in times of crisis are crucial to student and staff safety, as well as organizational reputation. The intent of this quantitative comparative study was to examine the differences between Oklahoma school superintendents' crisis communication strategies and their number of prior crisis experiences and tenure as a superintendent. Coombs' (2007) Situational Crisis Communication Theory was applied to explain the differences between the variables in the study and to further examine techniques used by superintendents when communicating with stakeholders during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants were purposefully recruited from public school systems in Oklahoma. The final sample consisted of 139 superintendents who completed the email surveys. Data analysis revealed that the amount of prior crisis experience did not impact crisis communication at a statistically significant level. Superintendents with little to no crisis experience handled the communication strategies during COVID-19 equally as well as those with more crisis experience. However, superintendents with longer tenure in the district demonstrated statistically significant differences in terms of crisis communication strategies used than those with less tenure. Additionally, there were differences between communication strategies used with district parents and with district staff.
