AbstractThis narrative study explored the experiences of Black college students who participated in a student conduct program at Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs), a perspective that has been largely ignored in the literature. Specifically, narratives around Black college students' overall experience at PWIs, experience with student conduct programs, and perceptions of fairness, learning, and influences to academic success based on student conduct program participation were examined through in-depth interviews with two participants. Interview transcripts were analyzed using a Listening Guide (Gilligan, 2015) approach and narratives were then constructed into the form of participant counterstories. Results confirmed prior research, demonstrating that Black college students experience harmful racial microaggressions that negatively impact their college experience but the existence of counterspaces helps to provide positive experiences while attending a PWI. Additionally, results showed that participants view fairness in a student conduct program as compared to how others in the program were or were not treated similarly. Recommendations include creating meaningful programs and formal/informal counterspaces for Black college students at PWIs, building a trustworthy college/university administration, increased transparency in student conduct programs, and future research on student experience at PWIs and student conduct programs.
