Abstract | Although external engagement practices, such as parent, family, and community engagement, are widely acknowledged as good teaching practice, there are no regulations and little fiscal support in the state of California for conducting these practices within the school system. Using the conceptual framework of community equity literacy (CEL) (Green, 2017), an exploratory case study examined a teacher credential program at a large university in the Los Angeles area to understand the methods through which preservice teachers prepare for community engagement once they become teachers of record. Data were collected via a document analysis that included course syllabi, signature assignments, and the college's framework along with faculty interviews. The study looked for evidence of (a) understanding community history, (b) working from asset and structural-based perspectives about community, (c) recognizing and leveraging community assets, (d) navigating community power structure, and (e) advocating for community and school equity (Green, 2017). A data analysis matrix was created as a tool to interpret the data collected. The findings of this study demonstrated the need for further study both in depth and scope, and have implications that extend beyond the course, program, college, and field of education.
