AbstractExisting research on first-generation college graduates' professional experiences is limited because previous research has focused on first-generation students' experiences from high school to higher education and the barriers and persistence factors that impact their experiences during their undergraduate studies. The research that does examine the professional experiences of first-generation college graduates focuses on the impact that a college degree has on first-generation college graduates' social mobility, their relationships with family members, resources deemed effective contributors to their matriculation, and career experiences within the corporate sector. This dissertation expands the literature for its purpose is to understand the professional experiences of first-generation college graduates that have become educators. This qualitative study explored why first-generation college graduates become educators, why they remain in the field, what are the barriers that they face and how do they overcome them, and how they describe their professional experiences. The research findings reveal that first-generation college graduates enter the field of education because they are motivated by a desire to give back and their own personal hardships, and they remain in the field of education due to their commitment to student success; these findings can influence the teacher pipeline, school leadership pipeline, and secondary and higher education academic programming and support services for first-generation college students.
