AbstractAnxiety and openness have been understudied in Asian populations, especially Asian Indians, but have been correlated with acculturation and multicultural exposure in university students in the United States. This research furthers the study of the connection between anxiety and biculturalism by exploring this association in Chinese and Indian international students at universities in the United States. In early 2019, 119 participants completed the BFI Openness scale and the PROMIS-57 Profile v.2 Anxiety scale. Bicultural identity was assessed with the BIIS-2 and scored along dimensions of bicultural harmony and bicultural blendedness. Research focused on the impact of different acculturation factors on trait openness and anxiety symptoms in Chinese and Indian international students, as well as differences between the two groups. Moderation models were used, with bicultural dimensions as predictors, country of origin (China and India) as a moderator, and anxiety and openness as outcome variables. Follow-up t-tests were used to determine significant differences between groups. Blendedness was found to be a significant, positive predictor of openness in Indian participants but not Chinese participants. In general, Indian participants scored higher on openness than Chinese participants. Harmony was a significant, negative predictor of anxiety, without moderation from country of origin. This exploratory research targeted an understudied population and compared it to a population with existing research, in order to further the study of India and the Indian diaspora, which involves a significant proportion of the global population.
