AbstractThe racial achievement gap has persisted in the decades since "Brown v. Board," despite large-scale investment in school reform. Accordingly, some administrators and politicians are reconsidering integration policies as a means of addressing the gap. This study examines one Chicago community's discussion of such integration policy. Introduced as a means of addressing space allocation issues and racial isolation, a proposed merger between two adjacent but demographically opposite K-8 schools caused controversy among parents. Analysis of their online discussions about the merger provides insight into the local politics among policy entrepreneurs and community stakeholders. The merger's opponents leveraged historical assumptions about crime, student achievement, and freedom of choice in order to prevent the merger and maintain the status quo. (As Provided).
