Abstract | This study documents the experiences of two diverse groups of women holding educational leadership positions in two very different locales: one in an urban sector in the east, the other in a rural area of the mid-west, and illuminates the challenges they face in maintaining and furthering their leadership positions. Drawing on focus-group methodology to explore the overt and covert forms of discrimination women leaders experience as they embrace roles of power, decision-making, and authority, we found three issues with which all participants struggled: difficulties in achieving and maintaining "voice," the challenges when faced with gendered and racialized "microaggressions," and the politics of "fit." These themes are offered as sightlines into the challenges currently facing women in educational leadership roles. (As Provided). |
