Abstract | This study seeks to understand the role the Black church plays in the creation of community based charter schools, in shaping Black parents' perceptions about the charter school movement and their own choices in where to enroll their children, and in helping Black parents navigate the school choice landscape. A predominantly Black church in the southeastern United States was identified as having created a charter school, and consequently was selected for participation in this study. Church leaders and visionaries of the charter school were interviewed, and Black parents who were either members of the church or enrolled their children in the school chartered by it were subsequently recruited for participation in the quantitative portion of the study. The findings of this study hold major implications for helping Black parents navigate a school choice environment that all too often tries to marginalize them and limit access. (As Provided). |
