Abstract	While the original Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 established no requirements for family involvement, every subsequent reauthorization has made stipulations for the inclusion of families in their children's education (Mapp, 2012). Additionally, the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA) shifted the requirement from "parent involvement" to "parent engagement" (Henderson, 2015). In accordance with Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) regulations, school districts must adhere to the federal legislation definitions of what qualifies as parent engagement in a public school. This paper shares the authors' perspective of family engagement and the models that have emerged from three decades of family engagement work. They present strong evidence of what works for families most in need and what produces positive outcomes for families and programs. (ERIC).
