AbstractThe purpose of this problem of practice was to explore the experiences of athletic administration professionals who work with African American student-athletes. Reviewing sport through a critical lens leads us to see that sport is still operating behind an inconspicuous veil of artificial accounts, colorblind racism, and statistics of progress that impact the modern student-athlete experience (Bimper A. Y., 2015). To conduct this study, an open sample was taken of ten student-athlete development professionals from across the nation who were interviewed by the principal researcher in person, by phone call or through a video chat service such as "Facetime." There was a set number of questions that were pre-determined, but the researcher left room for additional questions and discussion prompts based off of the answers from the respondents. Those who participated in the study shared the characteristics of serving in a capacity of life skills or student-athlete development along with working at Division I institution. The research from this study showed that while mentorship was the overarching theme, those who serve as student-athlete development professionals all recognized that managing personal and athletic identities and preparing for life after college were the two main themes in their daily lives of working with students.
