| Abstract | This study examines the sustainability of international branch campuses by applying the "faculty migration" framework (Matier, 1988) from faculty recruitment literature to identify the incentives that influenced American faculty to work at branch campuses in Qatar's Education City. The purpose of this study was to determine the specific work-related and non-work-related benefits that influenced American faculty to work at branch campuses in a Middle Eastern country, and to examine the factors that guided their decisions to work overseas. This case study utilized qualitative techniques in the form of site observation, document analysis, and seven in-person interviews with faculty and administrators from five branch campuses in order to gain perspective into the incentives that positively motivated faculty. Further analysis was conducted using data from surveys of 39 American expatriates. Findings from this study indicate that American faculty members were greatly influenced by financial incentives, such as salary and an increased standard of living, alongside the desire for adventure or change in their lives. Based on this analysis, branch campuses in Qatar seeking to improve their recruitment practices may benefit from focusing their efforts toward specific groups of faculty who are most likely to work and stay in the country, such as married couples without children and faculty who have prior exposure to the Middle East.
