AbstractThis study utilized a quantitative design using archival data from Johnson County Community College (JCCC), located in Johnson County, Kansas, and the Office of Financial Aid for students who graduated, withdrew or dropped out of the college in academic years 2006, 2007 and 2008. Because this study used archival data, we can only show relationships between data, not causality. This study was both exploratory and quantitative in nature. Logistic regression analysis was used to explore the statistical relationship in predicting default when controlling for the Estimated Family Contribution (EFC), JCCC cumulative GPA, graduation status, sex, race, total loan indebtedness, Kansas high school/GED/out-of-state high school credentials, degree/certification major and the age of the borrower at the time of repayment. Results indicated JCCC cumulative GPA to have a small, statistically significant, negative relationship with default when controlling for EFC, graduation status, sex, race, total loan indebtedness, Kansas high school/GED/out-of-state high school credentials, degree/certification major and the age of the borrower at the time of repayment. Student borrowers in the population study who had a status of withdrawn or dropped out were shown to have a statistically significant relationship with default compared to students who completed their programs. GED status had a small, statistically significant relationship with default compared to students who held Kansas high school credentials, when controlling for the remaining variables. Student borrowers entering repayment between the ages of 35 to 39 years old were found to have a medium, statistically significant relationship to default when controlling for the remaining independent variables in the population study.
