AbstractCompared to other races, the college achievement gap is largest between Black men and women where females earn twice as many degrees as their male counterparts (National Center for Education Statistics, 2010, Status and trends in the education of racial and ethnic minorities). Many Black men attempt college and eventually drop out forfeiting their goals of achieving an academic degree. This ends up having negative implications for these men, their families, and other societal entities. Program administrators and others responsible for the implementation of the federal college retention program TRiO Student Support Services Program (SSS) can improve the number of Black men that graduate from college, but first they must understand why the students leave. A qualitative phenomenological research study included ten men who were members of a SSS program at a community college in Southeastern Texas. The study involved a series of data collection methods that allowed the men to explain the factors they attributed to their decisions to drop out of college. Content analysis was used to review the data for similar and dissimilar experiences for the participants. The analysis of the data produced five themed categories that explain the experiences of the participants. Several recommendations were made based on the results of the study. The recommendations are focused on how the TRiO community and others responsible for college retention can improve programs to retain and graduate Black men from institutions of higher education.
