Abstract	This case study highlighted the fundamental reasons why a small group of African American male high school seniors in the selected school district succeeded academically while their same race peers did not. Through classroom observation, interviews, and focus groups, the researcher uncovered factors related to instructional practices and classroom environment, sociocultural influences, learner self-perceptions, and common life experiences, which contributed to the success of this small group of outliers. The qualitative methods used in the study gave voice to the students as they described their individual and collective experiences. The findings indicated that teachers' high expectations, a comfortable and safe learning environment, loyal friends, and a strong relationship with their mothers contributed to the success of this population. A careful examination of the study findings may lead school personnel to engage in critical conversations about issues related to African American male achievement. The context focusing on the common themes present in the lives of high-achieving African American males may lead to meaningful school based reform and increased achievement for all students.
