AbstractTechnology and knowledge seem to be at hand for everyone, but evidences show that both still are eluding us. University of Guadalajara (UDG) as well as other Higher Education Institutions creates knowledge from research in a daily basis. Nevertheless, in UDG there is not system that promotes creation, preservation and, sharing of knowledge created of experiences from research work among faculty members. At University of Guadalajara-South Coast campus a virtual community was created in a wiki website, which was used as a Knowledge Management System (KMS) tool for collaboration and experiences inter-exchange among its members to promote knowledge creation about conducting a research among its members. The wiki contained a set of 27 topics related on research issues previously posted in which, for three months, its members were able to post questions, answers and/or replies on correspondent topics. Findings suggest that this kind of community is comprised by one or two leaders and, its followers. They also suggest for a knowledge creation in the wiki; rather that matters how interesting the subject matter is how active members participate on the discussion. Evidences from the study proved that informal knowledge is created and shared among the members on this Virtual Community. Although, it does not follows the strict sequence of knowledge conversion of Nonaka and Takeuchi's creation spiral theory of knowledge. Furthermore, evidences also suggest for a successful KMS, important features among its members such as sharing culture, internet tool's knowledge and, members' identity disclosure are needed. Still, many questions have arisen for future research such as why some times knowledge creation did not follow the proposed sequence of knowledge conversions at Nonaka & Takeuchi Knowledge Creation Spiral theory proposes? What are its implications? What is the cost on human resources on creation a knowledge sharing culture in Higher Education Institutions? These new questions mean that a research window on Knowledge Management Systems still opened for future research work.
