AbstractMexican American adolescents are now the largest linguistically and culturally diverse ethnic group in our schools today. Acculturation difficulties of adapting to a new culture may effect adolescent achievement in school. Mexican American adolescents may be torn between their ethnic heritage and the culture of the U.S. They must master a new language, culture, and behaviors to be able to successfully acculturate. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the stories of Mexican American adolescents in order to determine the acculturation factors that influenced their success in school. This study utilized narrative inquiry techniques to discern themes from the stories of eight purposively selected participants. Five recurring themes were identified: family support, teacher support, extracurricular activities, personal characteristics, and culture. Understanding both the challenges of acculturation that our Mexican American adolescents face as well as the factors that positively influenced them will enable educators to meet the educational needs of this diverse student population.
