AbstractThe gender gap in administrative public school positions has been a perpetual problem throughout history. Although women have gained a foothold on elementary principalship positions, they have continued to lag behind men in secondary school principalship positions. The purpose of the study was to examine gender demographics and compare the results with campus academic ratings reported in the AEIS report by the state of Texas for the year 2006. Results concluded whether a specific gender was prevalent and existed with regard to campus size, campus type, and campus rating. A comparative, quantitative research design was utilized with a cross-tabulation, Pearson Chi-square test statistic. Procedures for the study included gathering the gender of all public school principals in the state of Texas by utilizing a TEA data bank. The 2006 AEIS report generated information regarding campus size, campus level, and campus rating for every school in the state of Texas. Results indicated that a significant relationship exists between each of the variables tested. Findings indicated that men were more prevalent at the junior high and high school level, while women were more prevalent at the elementary campus level. A significant relationship was found between gender and campus rating; as men principals were more likely to have lower ratings and women principals were more likely to be found at the exemplary, recognized, and acceptable rating. Results indicated that men are most prevalent at campuses with 500 or less students, as well as at campuses with 1,001 or more students. The prevalence for women was found at campuses with 501 to 1,000 students. The prevalence of gender at particular school campuses has continued, as gender was found to be significantly related to campus size, campus rating, and campus level. Recommendations were made for future hiring practices and research. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
