AbstractThis dissertation is composed of three studies on Thai labor markets using a pseudo-panel data set: The first chapter estimates the rate of return to education in Thailand, while treating the endogeneity bias common to estimates from data on individuals. Pseudo-panel data are constructed from repeated cross sections of Labor Force Surveys (1986-2005) of workers who were born between 1946 and 1967. One fundamental finding is that there is a downward bias of the rate of return to education in cross-sectional least squares regressions on individual data so that returns to education in Thailand are substantially higher than previously estimated. This result is confirmed with instrumental variable (IV) estimation based on the location of universities and/or a teacher training colleges as an IV. The second chapter investigates the labor supply behavior of Thai women using a synthetic cohort data constructed from the Labor Force Survey (1985-2004). Estimates are presented for the impact of wage changes on hours worked, on the employment/population ratio, and on the hours worked-population ratio, for cohorts of women identified by year of birth, educational attainment, and survey year. Results are presented for all working women, and groups of women classified by age, cohort, marital status, education, and urban-rural residence. The supply curve for hours worked is found to be downward sloping, with an estimated wage elasticity of approximately -0.25 across various models and disaggregations. This last chapter studies the determinants of income inequality in Thailand from 1992 to 2001 using a synthetic cohort data set constructed from Household Socio Economic Surveys. One main finding is that there is a non-linear relationship between inequality and per capita income. In addition to the variation in the years of education of heads of household, the variance in the number of earners in the household is also a source of income inequality. However, the variation of the number of children shows significant relationship to income inequality only for women and for people living in urban areas.
