AbstractThe purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine the influence of the graduation coach's ethic of care on potential dropouts (at risk high school seniors) in a Georgia alternative high school. Based on Maslow's hierarchy of needs, the objective of this research was to identify if the graduation coach's ethic of care had an influence on the dropout rate. Data for this qualitative case study, situated in the narrative tradition of educational inquiry and interview methodology, was collected from field notes, rich descriptive narratives, a focus group discussion including participant observation, direct observation, and a survey to determine how the ethic of care provided by the graduation coach influenced the dropout rate. Face-to face interviews were conducted with 5 potential dropouts who were identified by the graduation coach through attendance, discipline, retention, and academic data. Overarching themes emerged from the data which included: career and post secondary advice, unconditional positive regard, academic motivator, personal, and sense of belonging. Each of these themes played a critical role in how students perceived the ethic of care provided by the graduation coach. This study provided a foundation for a better understanding of the ethic of care and its significance for societal well being. Reducing dropouts and increasing graduation rates has societal implications on a global scale socially, economically, and politically. Understanding the complexities related to dropouts is critical in order to modify existing school programs and to create effective programs and practices. Addressing the dropout issue requires critical review of current educational practices, personal interactions with students, and educational policies.
