Abstract	When your school wants to do more to improve the literacy skills of secondary school students, here's a leadership plan that takes your program in a bold, new direction. Instead of focusing on isolated teaching strategies and textbooks, the authors introduce you to a whole-school program that emphasizes: (1) Exposing students in all subjects to literacy-rich experiences; (2) Using curriculum materials that draw students into literacy experiences that they find relevant and meaningful; (3) Focusing instruction on themes, big ideas, and essential questions that span the subject areas; and (4) Providing time every day for students to read independently. Discover how teachers in any subject can help their students comprehend informational texts and apply their understanding across the content areas.
