AbstractThe people at Inverness Research Associates spent 12 years studying Community Science Workshops (CSW) in California and in six other states. They gathered statistics on the scale, scope, and cost-efficiency of CSW services to youth. They observed youth at work in the shops--taking apart computers, repairing bikes, growing plants, and so on--and interviewed youth and CSW directors. They also attended meetings of CSW directors and interviewed the national coordinators and principal investigators. In this brief, they distill the major findings from their research, and they provide their independent perspective on the CSW. Their research on the Community Science Workshops yields a set of findings suggesting that the CSW is a model for serving underserved youth that is both powerful and feasible: (1) CSWs serve an important population in an important content area; (2) CSWs produce important benefits to youth; (3) The CSW model is replicable; (4) The CSW model is cost-efficient; and (5) The CSW model is sustainable.
