AbstractAcross the country, educators in schools that have not met their targets for improved student learning are considering next steps. As a first step, a school improvement plan that is grounded in data and based on a comprehensive needs assessment can provide a framework for effecting change for a school's programming, student support systems, and climate. Research has identified a set of six elements that highly effective schools have in common: (1) Aligned and Rigorous Curriculum; (2) Effective Instruction; (3) Use of Formative Assessment and Student Assessment Data; (4) Positive School Climate Focused on Achievement; (5) Effective School Leadership; and (6) Family and Community Engagement. Most schools will find that they have strengths in some of these indicators and can build upon those when developing their comprehensive improvement strategies. (Contains 1 table.)
