Abstract	Dr. Carl E. James is well known for his work in the area of the Sociology of Sport. Race in Play is on the continuum of his earlier research in the sociology of sport, and youth, race, and education. James takes the reader on an edifying walk through the structural, institutional community which supports and sustains sports, at the same time making individual links between sports, schooling, and career aspirations among youth. He also explores issues of race, racialized minority youth, and Black men and women in sport. This book begins with an Introduction: Race, Sport, and Schooling, followed by seven chapters: (1) "That's Why I Come to School": The Significance of Sports to the High School Plans of Grade Eight Students; (2) Race and the Social/Cultural Worlds of Student Athletes; (3) The Long Shots: Going South on Basketball Tickets; (4) The Gendered Experiences of Female Students in Sport with Special Reference to Alicia; (5) Set Dreams, Failed Plans, Frustrated Transitions, and Lessons Learned; (6) Teaching Athletes or Coaching Students: On the Role of Coaches; and (7) Parental Concerns: Perceptions of the Opportunities and Possibilities of Sports. This book concludes with the following conclusion: Toward More Inclusive Schooling for Student Athletes. (ERIC).
