| Abstract | There are numerous ways in which parents can assist students in social studies. Parents can read aloud library books that deal with social studies; older peers can also read aloud, providing practice to the older student as well. Parents can relate current events to a nearby globe, locating places mentioned in newscasts. In addition, parents and students can visit historical places of interest in the community. Parents can also show students the importance of economics in daily life, the environment, and community activities, such as the election process. Students can take part in hands-on activities as well, creating models of businesses on city blocks, volcanoes, furniture from a specific time period, or maps. Social studies work at home can inspire students' interest and work in school. (PM) |
