| Abstract | This report presents an update on what has happened in college athletics since three previous reports published in the early 1990s. It was developed following a series of meetings with a broad range of sports representatives and higher education leaders. The report examines progress made by the NCAA toward a proposed "one-plus-three" model for intercollegiate athletics (presidential control directed toward academic integrity, financial integrity, and independent certification of athletics programs). The report concludes that the NCAA had made considerable progress toward achieving the goals but cautions that good intentions and reform measures of recent years have not been enough. It notes that the problems of big-time college sports have grown rather than diminished, and the most glaring elements of the problem (academic transgressions, a financial arms race, and commercialization) are all evidence of a widening chasm between higher education's ideals and big-time college sports. A call to action highlights the need for the higher education community to act together and for a coalition of presidents to act together to transform intercollegiate athletics. Five appendixes include additional issues for consideration, action on Knight Commission recommendations of March 1991, meeting participants, acknowledgements, and statement of principles. (SM) |
