AbstractThis study, written in both English and Spanish, examined the decision-making process of Hispanic families living in the United States who have a child with a hearing loss. Twenty-nine families in four different geographical areas shared their experiences in learning about their child's disability, searching for appropriate interventions, and making choices regarding communication and education. The study explores the effects of language, culture, minority status, and access to information on the decision-making process. The experiences of eight representative families are highlighted. Results indicate: (1) Hispanic parents had many of the same difficulties in obtaining a diagnosis as non-Hispanics, however, problems were exacerbated by language difficulties and by limited access to health care; (2) parents who were unable to take full advantage of information and resources available in English tended to have a narrow perspective of the options available for their child; (3) while most parents cited English and/or sign language as most important for their child to learn, many hoped their child would acquire English, American Sign Language, and Spanish; and (4) parents were frequently dissuaded from cochlear implants because of surgery risks and because the benefits were described as insignificant. Implications for service providers are discussed and an appendix provides more information about the eight families. (Contains 21 references.) (CR)
