| Abstract | This case study documents the changes one urban secondary school English teacher made to improve the quality of her students' educational experiences, noting the impact of her school's participation in the Coalition of Essential Schools. The first section describes her transition from being a good conventional teacher to being a teacher-as-coach, examining her changing role in the classroom. The second section presents one day in two reformed, 10th-grade English classrooms, also describing a team planning session. The third section presents the teacher's reflections on pedagogical change, explaining how she adapted the nine Common Principles of the Coalition of Essential Schools. This section also looks at factors that supported change (e.g., team collaboration and allocation of time); factors that hindered change (e.g., personal fears and various personal and structural transitions); and motivations to continue (e.g., student response and expansion of the teacher's own knowledge and understanding).
