| Abstract | This study uses data collected from Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) (Washington) databases to analyze the socioeconomic impact of its educational services upon the larger community. Data was collected from an unduplicated enrollment of 31,072 at all MHCC colleges, applying analysis to 100% of those enrollees. It is estimated that 60% of students remain in the local community and thereby generate local community benefits. The paper argues that an increased demand for goods and services is associated with the increased earnings attributable to the acquisition of skills at MHCC. In analyzing the data, benefits and costs was projected over 10 years for 1 student, with the objective of measuring future benefits and comparing them with the cost of education. The study found an improvement in health, and a reduction in smoking and alcohol abuse, welfare assistance, and incarceration associated with higher education levels. The study also found that improved health, lower welfare and unemployment, and lower crime will result in annual taxpayer savings for the community of $7.3 million. In addition, the paper asserts that the returns are attractive to the private sector as well as to the public sector. (Contains 26 tables and 37 references.) (NB) |
