AbstractA study assessed whether training packages gave sufficient focus to attainment of generic skills and examined approaches that can be used to enhance the delivery of these skills so students are better prepared for the new demands of the workplace. A literature review and consultations with stakeholders provided information on development of the Australian training packages and identification of the generic competencies required by industry. Findings indicated that the 7 Mayer key competencies (collecting, analyzing and organizing information; planning and organizing activities; communicating; working with others and in teams; using mathematical ideas and techniques; solving problems; using technology; identifying, analyzing, and applying the practices of culture) were incorporated in all training packages to underpin the competency standards. Three generic competencies (working with others, communicating in the workplace, and following health, safety, and security procedures) were found to be compulsory in 10 industry sectors studied. Good practice in delivering generic skills training was found to be based on provision of a large variety of experiences and learning strategies. Industry supported integration of generic and technical skill development because it was felt to be closer to the real experience of the workplace and provided easier transfer of generic skills to this context. Enterprises selected for good practice tended to have structures in place to promote a learning culture and a commitment to training by managers. Appendixes include the 10 case studies.
