AbstractThis report provides an overview of the tuition and fees at Virginia colleges and universities. Tuition and fees at Virginia's four-year public institutions have been among the highest regionally and nationally for many years. Between 1990 and 1999, tuition and mandatory fees increased by 65% on average. As a result, the governor and the General Assembly took action to reduce these charges by 20 percent for 1999-2000. The average charge at the senior institutions will be $2,254. It is estimated that mandatory charges for resident undergraduates will fall from 8th highest nationally to 18th within the major public university category, and from 7th to 10th in the public colleges and state universities. Fees for Virginians attending the community colleges on a full-time basis will be reduced by $285 to $1,100. Under this arrangement, charges for community colleges will drop from 24th to 40th nationally. The report presents exact tuition and fee increases for residents and non-residents and provides 12 charts reporting trends in tuition and mandatory fees between 1974 and 1999, technology fees, and comparative information by institution and by state. Appended are the full-time resident and non-resident charges for undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. (JJL)
