Abstract | Generally, immersion is carried out in circumstances where children who speak the majority language are taught the minority language. In this way, the security of the language learners is secured in intensive teaching. In Pietarsaari, Finland, an experiment on language immersion has been started, in which minority Finnish children with a completely Swedish background are immersed in Finnish. The objective of this long-term research project is to study the Finnish language proficiency achieved using the immersion method in a primary school. On the basis of this study, conclusions may be drawn on whether pupils have reached a second language (L2) competence and level of bilingualism that will enable them to manage the different theoretical subjects taught in Finnish secondary school. The study focused on two classes of pupils selected for observation in the spring of 1997. The pupils were in their second and third school year when tested for the first time. The study will concentrate on the learning process, learning order and duration of learning in the different sectors of L2 proficiency--speaking, reading, and writing. (Author/VWL) |
