AbstractThis collection of articles on school choice profiles five Hispanic and Black families who were not willing to wait for promised improvements in local schools. The articles begin with a discussion of minority parents who are quietly embracing school choice, examining their restlessness with the public schools, the charter school push, mixed public opinion, the generation gap in opinions about charter schools, and challenges with school choice. The five family stories focus on one family's satisfaction with the amount of personal attention provided by their charter school; one family's opportunity to leave a failing public school; the spiritual and moral foundation provided to one family by their charter school; one black family's decision to exercise their options and find a private school where their children would be exposed to racial and ethnic diversity every day; and one mother's efforts to reconcile her family's long-term commitment to public education with her passion for school choice.
