AbstractThis paper reports on research and consultative processes related to design of a course in knowledge management (KM) undertaken by the School of Computer and Information Science at Edith Cowan University (Australia). A survey instrument was distributed to practitioners in the library, information management, records management, and computing industry sectors. The survey instrument was designed to measure preferences in terms of course content, course options (i.e., professional development, program of study in an existing award, or dedicated award), industry demand for KM qualified personnel, and attitudes toward KM. Whether respondents were positively or negatively disposed toward KM was measured using a Likert scale. Statements focused on three key dimensions of attitude toward KM: denoting expectations, identification or belonging, and perceived valued. Dimensions were operationalized with statements that invited respondents to say whether they: regarded KM as durable; saw themselves as Knowledge Managers; and could see career benefits in learning more about KM. Data are presented for sample population characteristics, KM training needs (course content), course options, employability, and attitudes toward KM. A provisional postgraduate studies model for a KM course is described. (Contains 11 graphs and 9 references.) (MES)
