Abstract | This Ready--Set--Read Kit includes an activity guide for families, a 1997-98 early childhood activity calendar, and an early childhood growth wallchart. The activity guide presents activities and ideas that families (adults who have nurturing relationships with a child--a mother, father, grandparent, other relative, or close friend) can use to help young children learn about language. The activity guide also divides activities into 4 age groups: young babies (birth to 8 months); crawlers and walkers (8 to 18 months); toddlers (18 to 36 months) and preschoolers (3 to 5 years). The activity guide concludes with a list of reading and writing play materials, the 40-item American Library Association's Suggested Book List for Young Readers, and 13 additional resources. The calendar is filled with helpful tips and special activities that promote reading and language skills for young children. The growth chart measures children's height and language development, and gives age-appropriate activities to promote language development for young children. (RS) |
